March is the beginning of kitten season, and Hagrid’s Hope Cat Rescue asks you to understand that we are a small rescue which operates on donations, without any government or corporate funding. We do not have the resources to meet the demand within our city or county to help all the homeless cats and kittens. We are doing the best we can.
If you live in Portage, please read the policies of the city animal control and county animal shelter posted below. (These policies are copied directly from their websites.)
If you live outside of Portage, please read at the bottom for the list of local shelters that may help you, if you live within their service areas.

While driving down Central Ave this afternoon we saw a man who was waving on traffic very frantically. We pulled over and he said that his dog got loose. He was very upset... but.. we CAUGHT HER !!!! Yeah!!!!
Her name is Mia.. sweetest husky girl. We're so thankful she didn't get hit and we were able to help. We may be Hagrid's Hope Cat Rescue, but dogs are just as important !! I wish them many more days of happiness!!
Is anyone interested in fostering a mother cat with brand new babies? She gave birth to 5 kittens on Jan 11.
If you have not fostered before with us, we have to interview you first. If you have fostered before and are currently interested let us know.
They need placement ASAP.. thank you!
Please contact us through Facebook or email - hagridshope@gmail.com
We have several cats here in need for separate issues:
Ozzy- needs calm urinary food - ordered through prescription - $69 for a 4 pound bag
Vet Care -Houdini - iFIv positive cat, with neck injury. Needs more long term vet care.
3 feral babies and their momma - more vaccinations this week and vet checks. Their mother was trapped last night and is at SNIP today. She will be here this evening .
Lyka- the cat we posted with puss all over his face, is improving and needs a second round of meds and vaccines .
Oswald- is healing from his urinary block and will still have some tests to follow up with his care.
These are just some of the cats/kittens that are in and out of the vet office a lot lately and could use your support . Any of the cats will benefit as we are a non-profit and saving lives is what we aim to do. One hundred percent of donations go to cat care.
If you'd like to donate to their care you can either call Hero Pet Small Animal Hospital and donate over the phone to Hagrid's Hope Cat Rescue by calling (219) 515-4376
Or we also have PayPal, and you can specify where your donation goes .
$10 for e-photos / $20 for a printed photo

Adopted a few months ago, Ozzy is loving his new furever home
Food - we go through a 40 pound bag every 2 days
Kitten milk - a can or 2 a day
Litter - we go through 6-10 boxes a day!
Cleaning supplies - 4 rolls of paper towels daily , bleach, scrubbers, natures miracle, etc.
Electricity - especially vital for keeping newborns warm, as well as all the other cats and kittens
Veterinarian bills - shots, wellness checks, spay/neuter surgeries, medicines - if they're sick it can be several hundred a visit. If an entire litter is sick, it's costly to get medications for the whole group
We save the lives of these sweet, but helpless little fur babies.
We delight in finding a family that loves and takes care of them.
Help Smokey to Breathe Easy
Smokey, a 6-month-old grey kitten, struggles to breathe and needs specialized tests and surgery. When he sleeps, he snores and snorts, and his throat and chest cave in. It sometimes seems like he will stop breathing. When he’s awake, he holds his mouth open, and breathes through his mouth. Eating is difficult because he has to eat a little, stop to breathe, and then eat a little more.
Smokey needs to have a C/T scan, nasal scope, and surgery for whatever is obstructing his nasal passage. Local vets do not have the specialized and tiny equipment necessary to help Smokey, and have referred him to the Purdue Small Animal Hospital. Smokey is scheduled to see a specialist on December 11. They tell us that the cost will be $3,000 -$4,000 for the tests and surgery. His vet bills have already totaled more than $1,000 so far.
Smokey’s Story
This summer, at a Hagrid’s Hope Cat Rescue yard sale fundraiser, a couple pulled up with 5 kittens they had found. They handed the kittens to a volunteer, and then drove away. The kittens were about 2 months old.
All 5 kittens were all sick with respiratory infections and were given antibiotics. They all recovered except for Smokey, who continued to snore and snort when he was sleeping. Over the past few months, he has been brought to the vet’s office 10 times, and put on antibiotics 7 times, as well as other medications. Despite all the medication, his condition has only worsened.
Several times, Smokey’s foster family called Hagrid’s Hope gravely concerned that Smokey was going to stop breathing. They are keeping him in an area with a humidifier and nebulizer, as per the vet’s instructions. They keep him propped up when he sleeps, and they stay with him 24/7. They are an amazing foster family, who have given him the best possible care.
Smokey is a sweet little guy who loves to be held, and loves to be with the other cats in the foster family’s home. His foster family wants very much to adopt him. Our rescue is trying to get him healthy so that he can live a happy life in his forever home.
Update: Smokey continues to have strong congestion and we are anxiously awaiting his appointment at Purdue on Dec. 11. We have been blessed with a generous donor who gave us the amount needed for the vet appointment. We are so grateful.
As the time got closer to the appointment date, we debating rescheduling because we did not have the funds.
We will still have additional expenses for follow-up visits, medications, travel to Purdue, etc. You can still donate to his continued care.

Adoptions are such a blessing. We love when adopters keep us updated with photos and stories about the new members of their families. Here are pics of Asher living his best life.
And they're always hungry!
According to state law cats/kittens cannot be adopted until they have been vaccinated for rabies and spayed/neutered. Kittens that are too young and too small for surgery cannot be adopted, but they can be fostered. Families that would like to adopt a kitten can foster the kitten until they are old enough and big enough for spay/neuter surgery, and then the families can officially adopt them. We will help with the costs for the surgery and vaccination.
Stevie came to us as part of a litter abandoned on someone's property in a plastic bin. Stevie's eyes were infected and bulging out and had to be removed if she was to survive.
Some of the people who follow our Facebook page said she should just be euthanized. The vet said that blind cats can live happy and healthy lives. In fact, he had a blind cat. So, we did an online fundraiser and were able to get enough money for her surgery. She recovered wonderfully and even enjoyed playing with the other kittens at the rescue. She has the sweetest personality. The workers at the vet’s office all adored Stevie, and recently one of the vet techs adopted her. We were careful about what kind of home Stevie would go to, but the vet tech has a single level house (no stairs) and a good understanding of the needs of a blind cat. Stevie has survived her by swatting flies out of midair, jumping up on shelves, playing with the other family cat, and learning her way all around the house. We love happy endings like this one.

Scarlett lost her eye after she was injured by a trap. She has been a brave little warrior. Then she got FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), which is a serious and life-threatening virus. Medication for FIP costs $700 a month. Initially, the vet said she needed 2 months' worth of medication, but now they say she needs 1 more round. A generous donor paid for the first 2 months of medications. We are raising funds for the 3rd month. If you want to help, please see our donations page.
Mary (B&W cat) was adopted earlier this year. Now this loving family is fostering Charlie (kitten).
You can see how well they're getting along.
We really appreciate our community, who adopt and foster our cats.
